Demystifying Hypnosis

Do you believe I can make you cluck like a chicken, or that I have the ability to control your mind? Both of these myths are false!

Hypnosis is not the mystical, magical, watch swinging, eerie trance state that people make it out to be. It actually is a very effective, non-invasive therapy used to help a wide range of concerns such as illness and disease, pain, addiction, clinical issues, and more.

Simply put hypnosis is direct communication with the subconscious mind to create positive change. We use Hypnosis to slow down the brainwaves in order to communicate directly with the subconscious mind which is where your beliefs and memories are stored.

“Change your beliefs, change your life.” How many times have you seen or heard that quote in the world of self-help? It’s true though, isn’t it? Changing your beliefs changes your perception and what is real for you. So let’s take a look at how hypnosis can change your beliefs.

During a hypnosis session you can expect to sit or lie down in a comfortable chair or massage table. The hypnotherapist will make sure you are relaxed and at ease. There will likely be soft music playing in the background and the therapist will be speaking softly and slowly. The client is in total control of the session and may move around and even speak throughout the session. The hypnotherapist is there as a guide to assist you through your journey and keep you on track and focused.

In order to enter into hypnosis the brainwaves are slowed down by using a technique called “induction.” The induction procedure involves the hypnotherapist giving suggestions of relaxation, calming and well-being. The client becomes very relaxed and experiences a much more focused attention. While the client is in this state of relaxation they are taken through a guided meditation and are given positive suggestions toward change. When the client comes out of the hypnotic state it’s as if they have had hours of sleep and feel refreshed and rejuvenated.

Hypnosis is experienced differently by everyone. Sometimes positive suggestions are enough to create permanent change in a person’s life, however sometimes root-cause work is required to go back to the first time they experienced the issue. For those clients where positive suggestions are enough they can save money by simply using hypnotherapy CDs to improve sports performance, sleeping, weight loss, and even to stop smoking.

Remember that not all hypnotherapists are created equal. Look for one that is registered with a reputable association such as the Association of Registered Clinical Hypnotherapists (ARCH) or the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association® (IMDHA). Your health is important so be sure to work with a hypnotherapist that has experienced advanced training and adheres to high ethical standards.
